Week 6:
Week 6:
During this week’s session, we worked in our groups on details that needed refining. We started by choosing music, taking the musicality, tempo and dynamics highly into account. We considered: does this music generate the same level of emotion we are trying to produce? Is there a clear connection between potential movement and the music? Will the music enhance or diminish the impact of our dancing?
We then reviewed the Marching motif started in week 4. We rearranged the patterns and placement; added and developed parts to bring more clarity and purpose; found stronger dynamics and inserted pauses to give a more robotic, characterless impression.
With our motif expanded and developed, we then performed it to the class. Only after this performance, dancing to the sound of Nathan’s counting, did we have the idea to simply use a metronome of 120 bpm as the ‘music’ for this section combined with his counting. We also concluded that we wanted to make certain parts seem as realistic as possible, combining genuine movements armies would use. Starting the dance very directly, simply and mechanically aims to dramatically contrast with the unravelling as the piece continues.
A pick-up point for improvement was to work on maintaining sharp and straight lines. Unison and complete togetherness is a priority. No originality can be shown in this section as we are working together as one ‘individual’. Positive feedback was that every gesture clearly related to our stimulus and we explored creative formations that were aesthetically pleasing to watch.
It has been intriguing to see the development of the Marching section from a very small idea, by myself and Nathan, into a carefully crafted powerful section.

ReplyDeleteI really enjoyed reading this blog Louisa. You have included relevant information and presented your blog with a clear structure making it easier for the reader to follow through. I really liked watching your piece as I feel your stimulus is clearly seen within your choreography and I love the emotion you have put behind your dance. Regarding your music do you feel it links to the questions you listed at the top of your blog in which you wanted the music to portray within your piece?

DeleteI think the chosen form of music for the Marching motif is relevant to this section and supports the raised questions I listed, even though it is just counting and a metronome. I believe it is simple but strongly effective. It also will contrast with the rest of the dance which will include far more intense and emotional pieces of music, for example Moonlight Sonata by Beethoven.
DeleteWhy do you think the use of a metronome, as well as my voice counting, was important? Has it changed the authenticity of the piece in your opinion?
ReplyDeleteThe metronome and counting increase the realness of our piece. This is something we really want to emphasise, to show that the devastating effects War has on individuals exists (our piece will develop to show this).
DeleteI believed we made good process this week and im excited to continue creating our choreography next week, watching the video back, are there any changes you think we could make in order to develop our piece further?
ReplyDeleteA few point we have identified to develop this section is to: focus on the clarity of our sharp intricate movements, be more precision in our patterning and formations and increase the strength of Nathans voice as he counts. With these changes made, the impact will be far greater on an audience.
