Week 2:

Lesson 2: Chance Method

Today we explored a different method of creating movement - the Chance Method. In advance, groups were asked to bring in any stimulus - we decided on a house plant.  We started the lesson working in small groups, going around at a fast pace annotating our ideas on each stimulus. Unlike our session the previous week, we did not have others' thoughts as an immediate source of influence. The class then came together to compare and contrast ideas.

We then picked three words we found compelling. Our chosen words were: Trust, Individuality and Rooted. With these in mind, we created four separate movements for each of the three words. This resulted in a total of 12 individual movements, numbered 1-12.

A random 12-sided dice generator was then used to form a pattern that included all the numbers. During this process we gained an extra three numbers in our sequence from the repetition of the digits 10, 9 and 6.

The sequence:

1 , 11 , 6 , 9 , 8 , 9 , 6 , 2 , 10 , 5 , 12 , 7 , 10 , 3 , 4

The last part of the lesson was to bind the new sequence together to produce a short motif. We introduced transitions to make the routine link smoothly.  Although it was created as a group, the motif was designed to be performed individually.

Our phrase was then adapted again, based on musical interpretation. When asked to chose a number from 1- 4, our choice of number 1 gave us the Night Lone Wolf Trait Remix by Ludovico Einaudi. We had to adapt the quality and dynamics of our piece to fit the selected music.

Initially, I found it hard to imagine how mixing up these various movements would create a well designed routine but the finished product was far more fluid and accomplished than I had expected. Overall, this was a fascinating way to create choreography and I look forward to exploring this technique in the future.

  1. This is a clear and well structured blog. You have explained the task in detail as well as talking about the challenges you faced and your thoughts and opinions upon the chance method. I like how you have included an image of your chosen stimuli as it gives the reader a better understanding of what your idea was about. Why were you drawn to using a plant as your stimulus ?

    1. My group chose a plant because we saw many forms of interpretation imbedded within it. One being a form of connection. Each leaf potentially could represent an individual, the vines and roots are intertwined- connecting them all. We could demonstrate growth which inevitably will make the plant/person stand stronger. We also saw it as a beacon of life, it relies on the sun and its climate. This could be a great way to display how precious and dependant life forms are on their surroundings.

  2. This is a very detailed blog Louisa. I like how you added a photo so us a reader can link your three chosen words to your stimuli. What made you pick trust, rooted and individuality over some of the other words and idea that were annotated on your sheet?

    1. We felt these words exuberated a powerful energy that came from the certainty of ones self. Since this motif did not require partner work, we decided to focus on how us as individuals can provide support for ourselves. The words also seemed give us more of a platform to explore movement from compared to other words we had written down like red, eye and wood.
