Week 7:
Week 7:
We met week 7 with enthusiasm and a clear idea of what we wanted to achieve
in the lesson. We quickly finished the music selection and started working on
the Coming Together section. This was a very enjoyable process; a strong
work ethic was established as we fed off each other’s ideas and were
open-minded as we experimented with the choreographic method, improvisation. With
all members of the group focused on teamwork and cooperation, our rate of
productivity was high – all were able to contribute ideas as well as listen to
the thoughts of others.
It was in this lesson that we decided to adapt the original Coming Together
section as we felt our message wasn't being expressed to the degree we wanted. Previously only representing the unity of an army, we adapted it to give an insight into the characters and personalities of the recruits. We see training taking place, demonstrated through movements such as leopard
crawls and salutes, but we also express the excitement and lively camaraderie
of the soldiers as they have fun and joke around, enlivened by their new
experiences. This section is the calm before the storm. The audience watch them, perhaps saddened by
their joie-de-vivre as they are still oblivious of their fate.
We performed this section at the end of class. Our peers commented on the
overwhelming emotional connection with the characters as they gained an insight
into their personalities - realising they are just ordinary people. Moving with
high energy we included turns, deep grounded lunges and quick head and arm
gestures to imitate the thrill and excitement they would be feeling as they
would shortly begin their new adventure.
The main point of improvement was to make sure that the crisp conformity of
the parade ground was matched in our lines and patterns, and that all movements
had a purpose. We must continuously reflect on what we are trying to
express.
This is a great blog. I feel your final piece has come together really well presenting clearly your chosen stimulus. I liked the use of emotion all the dancers carried out throughout the dance as I feel this really captivates the audience allowing them to connect with the characters the dancers are portraying. I also like how you have included the improvisation method for the "coming together" section as I feel this looks really effective and you get to see the dancers individuality through their use of movement. How will you prepare you piece for your assessment? are there any changes that need to be made?
ReplyDeleteIts great to hear how much you enjoyed working on this piece. do you think we have achieved your goal of adding meaning to all of our movements?
ReplyDeleteThank you. I believe we are increasingly developing the level of meaning and emotion I want us to get to. This was one of my most important goals and I feel we have all made massive improvements in this area.
DeleteThis is an excellent blog Louisa, its interesting hearing your perspective on the piece. Do you think we were able to get our message across to the audience? If so, How?
ReplyDeleteI do believe we are now projecting our message as we are not just focused on doing the steps but now performing and embodying our character more. I think this is particularly evident in the Coming Together section we developed this lesson. We focus on the feelings behind our movements here and reveal real personalities.
